Iconic Landmarks at Night

See New York City in a whole new light by exploring some of its iconic landmarks at night.

Head to Times Square

Credit: Juan Carlos Ramirez

Times Square is exciting any time of day you visit. It’s action-packed, filled with tourists, and many would say there is an undeniable energy and excitement that fills the air. A symphony of city sounds only adds to its charm. Car horns blare, brakes screech, passersby chatter, and construction work thrums and grinds on and on…and on.

While that kind of action can only be Times Square, if you really want to experience it the way it’s meant to be, then you’d be wise to visit by night.

That’s because this area, located between Broadway, Seventh Avenue and 42nd Street, is lit up with bright, almost blinding, LED lights and digital screens as far as the eye can see. So bright is Times Square, in fact, that it’s said that it can be seen from space. Or at least from an airplane.

Times Square rarely powers down, so if stimulus is what you crave, then you know where to go. While here, scope out flagship stores like Hershey’s Chocolate World, the Disney Store, or M&M’s World. Drop by Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! Museum. Or, catch a show on Broadway. Or just stand around and take it all in. Because just being in Times Square is an experience in and of itself.

💡 Did you know? Every night from 11:57 PM to midnight, Times Square becomes an open-air art space. The work in question is called the Midnight Moment, featuring a single piece of art that synchronizes across all the digital billboards in Times Square. It’s utterly mesmerizing, showcasing what happens when art and technology collide.

Walk Across the Brooklyn Bridge

Some of the best views in New York can be seen from the pedestrian walkway that runs along the Brooklyn Bridge, the major artery that connects Manhattan to Brooklyn over the Hudson River.

You won’t believe how breathtaking the cityscape looks at night. On a clear evening, you’ll see the moon and stars reflecting on the surface of the river. The setting is ideal for a leisurely stroll, or a romantic date —a proposal, perhaps?

See the Views from the Empire State Building Observation Deck

A long time ago, the Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world. Though it’s since been dethroned—and isn’t even the tallest building in New York City anymore—it’s nevertheless mighty impressive to see up-close and in-person.

The building opened in 1931 and was named the Empire State because it’s what New York was called. While it isn’t the tallest building, it’s one of the most iconic gracing the skyline. From its stature, history, to its Art Deco inspired architecture, this building is an emblem of the city of New York.

It also has personality. In 2012, LED lights were installed at the top of the building. These lights change color in celebration of important occasions, holidays, and causes—sometimes for major sporting events or to align with pop culture events (in 2022, the top lit up red in celebration of the re-release of Taylor Swift’s album, “Red”).

Beyond that, The Empire State building has two observation decks. One is on the 86th floor and the other on the 102nd. Both offer stunning panoramic views of the city which are, in our opinion, best enjoyed at night.

💡 Did You Know? Though it’s one of the more famous spots to see the city from above, the Empire State Building is far from the only tower with an observation deck you’ve got to see to believe. Check out the views from the Top of the Rock at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, the Edge experience from Hudson Yards, the One World Observatory on the One World Trade Center tower, and SUMMIT One Vanderbilt.

Arts and Culture

New York City is known for being one of the most culturally diverse cities in all of North America. Here, you’ll find endless museums, art galleries, theater performances, and so much to explore during the day—but even more so at night. We’ll take you through a few of our favorites.

Watch a Broadway Show

No trip to New York City would be complete without experiencing the magic of Broadway for yourself.

There are numerous Broadway musicals to discover in New York City, so you’re sure to find something for whatever story you’re in the mood for, whether you’re drawn to a classic musical or something more serious or suspenseful.

💡 Pro tip: To secure the best seats at the best price, consider booking in advance through official sites like Telecharge or TodayTix Theatre Tickets. For last-minute deals, the TKTS booth in Times Square is another great option. You can always just show up at the box office the day-of for last-minute tickets, usually released hours before the show.

Attend Museums' Late-Night Programs

New York takes its reputation as being the city that doesn’t sleep seriously. As a result, many of its museums offer extended hours. Popular spots like the Museum of Modern Art or the Met occasionally host special late-night events, letting visitors enjoy masterpieces in a quieter and moodier setting.

Enjoy Jazz at Clubs

New York City is home to some of the most iconic jazz venues on the continent. Some might even refer to it as the jazz capital of North America—though Seattle might like a word. If you’re craving a low-key concert in a dim-lit room, an all-around soulful and intimate performance, head to one of the city’s famous jazz clubs in the hopes of catching international musicians and rising stars alike.

Some popular spots include the Village Vanguard, which has been around since 1935, or the legendary Blue Note New York. Other honorable mentions include spots like Bill’s Place in Harlem, Smoke Jazz & Supper Club in the Upper West Side, or Birdland Jazz Club in Midtown.

Laugh at Comedy Clubs

Have a laugh while you’re in town—New York City is home to many top comedy clubs. Comedians on the rise and household names frequently take the stage in this town. It’s not uncommon to find one of the comedy greats trying out new material in front of an unsuspecting audience—one of those “only in New York” kind of moments. You never know who might drop in to sharpen their tight five.

Some of our favorite venues are The Comedy Cellar, Gotham Comedy Club, or Carolines on Broadway. While most clubs are 21+ or over, keep an eye out for all-ages venues if you’re under the legal drinking age.

Nightlife and Culinary Delights

New York City is known for its vibrant nightlife. The energy is palpable, you can almost feel it radiating from every street corner. If sundown signals “party time” to you, then check out some of these popular nightclubs and rooftop bars.

Dance in Nightclubs

Things really heat up in New York City after nightfall. Lovers of different musical genres will be happy to hear that here, you can expect a venue catered to every vibe, whether yours is hardcore, hip-hop, house music and beyond.

Grab your comfiest shoes and get ready to dance the night away at hotspots like Marquee, one of the city’s most renowned venues that frequently hosts international DJs, Le Bain, the Standard Hotel’s top-floor nightclub, or The Box, a burlesque venue in Nolita.

If you’re more into an underground scene, head to Brooklyn. Places like Elsewhere or House of YES host theme events and drag nights, perfect for all your late night (or early morning) adventures.

Sip Drinks at Rooftop Bars

We love a good rooftop bar, and few cities do these better than New York. There’s nothing quite like raising a glass while surrounded by a skyline as monumental as New York.

With its many skyscrapers, one of the things you’ll notice about New York is…just how tall it is. It’s home to the tallest buildings in the Western Hemisphere (that’s the One World Trade Center). In other words, you shouldn’t have much trouble finding a rooftop bar.

For a high-end night out, visit Westlight in Williamsburg—fancy drinks and jaw-dropping views included.

Want Midtown energy? 230 Fifth faces the Empire State Building, with:
Summer: Adirondack chairs for open-air lounging.
Winter: Igloos to keep it cozy while you take in the skyline.

Visit Swanky Cocktail Bars

NYC’s swankiest cocktail bars will have you feeling like you’re in an episode of "Sex and the City". Check out places like Attaboy, a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Lower East Side haunt. From the outside, it’s unassuming. But inside, this speakeasy-style spot is behind some of the most inventive cocktails in Manhattan.

If you're looking for a glamorous atmosphere, we love Dear Irving, with its mid-century-inspired interior, plush benches, and sophisticated cocktail menu.

There’s also PDT (Please Don’t Tell), a hidden bar you can only access through a vintage phone booth inside a hot dog joint. PDT doesn’t take reservations, so you’ll have to put your name down and wait until you’re summoned. But it’s worth holding out for: this underground bar delivers with its old-fashioned, clandestine vibes and inventive drink menu.

Shop at Night Markets

Only in New York can you shop just as much at night as you can during the day. The city accommodates numerous night markets, where you can get your hands on anything from street food to local crafts.

🍜 For a must-visit experience, check out the Queens Night Market. Running from spring to fall, this multi-cultural food festival brings together 100+ vendors, serving up delicious eats, handmade crafts, and unique finds.

🛍️ Pro tip: Bring a tote bag—you’re going to want to take some goodies home!

Indulge in Delicious Food

Got dinner plans? After scoping out some of these beloved New York City restaurants, you’ll surely want to make some. From high-end eats to grab-and-go street food options, in New York City, no craving will ever be left unsatisfied. And, just like the city itself, the food scene doesn’t sleep so you can indulge around the clock. Lucky you.

Dine at Top Restaurants

New York City is home to some of the world’s most renowned restaurants, with everything from Michelin-starred fine dining to cozy, late-night comfort food.

Katz’s Delicatessen in the Lower East Side serves its legendary pastrami sandwiches—and a ton of other options—until almost midnight daily. Other spots, like Carbone, serve up Italian eats—and may even be a good spot to do some glamorous people-watching (celebs have been known to dine here).

If you're looking for a more high-end dining experience, Le Bernardin is a must-visit for seafood lovers. It’s open until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Though the pricetag is hefty, the seafood-rich meal will no doubt be one of the most memorable ones you savor here. If you’re interested, you can learn more about this institution and other fancy restaurants in New York before making your choice.

Taste Street Food

New York City’s street food is, in a word, iconic. There are limitless choices available to you. Grab a hot dog from an Anthony Bourdain-approved joint like Gray’s Papaya on Broadway and 72nd. You can scarf down the late-night halal platter from The Halal Guys. Even just a warm pretzel from a street vendor is one of the best you’ll ever eat.

If you’re looking for something on the go, you’ll almost surely encounter a food truck—there’s practically one on every corner serving a variety of styles—tacos, dumplings, hot dogs, you name it.

💡 Pro tip: Don’t let long lines deter you. In New York, you should seek them out. A long line signals good food—and who better than New Yorkers to point you in the right direction?

Join Food Tours

Want to sample the best of NYC’s diverse food scene in one night? A guided food tour is the way to go.

These tours bring you to hidden gems and neighborhood hotspots. Food of NY Tours takes you through the heart and soul of Greenwich Village on its tour of the same name. For authentic Chinese eats, check out Ahoy’s tour of Chinatown so you can sample authentic dumplings, dim sum, and roast pork buns.

Enjoy Harlem Soul Food and Jazz Evening Tour

Soulful music and soul food come together on the Harlem Soul Food and Jazz Evening Tour. Your night begins with a plate of Southern classics—we’re talking fried chicken, cornbread, and collard greens. You then tour famous landmarks, like the Apollo Theater, and then stop off at a jazz club to vibe out into the wee hours of the night.

💡 Did You Know? The iconic Ella Fitzgerald won Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater in 1934 at just age 17, catapulting her into stardom. The competition still takes place weekly, to this day.

Unique Activities

Night owls, take note: These are some of our favorite unique and unconventional night activities in New York City.

Cruise on Night Ferries

If you want to see the city at night and take in stunning skyline views—but aren’t looking to break the bank—then board the Staten Island Ferry.

This free ferry runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and brings you across the Hudson River for some photo-worthy views of the skyline, where you can see the Statue of Liberty and Lower Manhattan do what it does best: inspire awe.

💡 Did You Know? More than 70,000 passengers ride the Staten Island Ferry daily? It’s been offering free rides to anyone and everyone since 1997, making it a popular way for tourists to see the city, or locals to get to see their home from a different perspective.

Take a Helicopter Night Tour

Want to *really* see New York? Take to the skies via helicopter tour at night! You’ll get a bird’s-eye view of iconic landmarks like Times Square, the Empire State Building, and the Brooklyn Bridge—for less than you might think. Check out companies like Hummingyrd, that offer the flight of a lifetime.

Get Spooked on Ghost Tours

If you love a good ghost story (and who doesn’t?) NYC’s haunted tours won’t disappoint, especially if you take part in the quiet hours of the evening.

There are countless options available, but we’re fond of Boroughs of the Dead anytime we fancy a fright, like near Halloween. This company offers tours throughout New York’s five boroughs, so you can experience the eerie side of the city no matter where you’re staying.

Other popular picks include The Greenwich Village Ghost Tour, where you can learn about the history of The Washington Arch, the Murder House, the Anne Charlotte Lynch House, and more—and maybe even spot a spirit or two.

The Haunted Broadway Tour is another popular pick, which takes visitors around the district’s 41 venues, sharing haunting tales, photos, and stories from each.

Visit The Cauldron NYC

The Cauldron NYC isn’t just about the magic of mixology. This fantasy-inspired bar invites visitors to concoct their own cocktails (or teas, for non-alcohol drinkers) like a potion.

Here’s how it works: Upon entry, guests are given wands and can choose from all sorts of ingredients via a digital menu. From there, they craft their own libations. It’s an enchanting experience that lets you spend a soirée steeped in mysticism.

Live Events

In New York, there are almost as many things to do as there are buildings in the sky. Craving some live action? Looking to feel energy pulsing through your veins? You’re in luck, because there really is no shortage of live events worth seeing in a city as lively as New York. From music, sports, or entertainment, the city has an event catered to every taste.

Enjoy the City’s Many Concerts

From massive arena shows to small-scale concerts, NYC is a concertgoer’s paradise—with a show suited for everyone’s tastes, no matter how eclectic they may be!

Madison Square Garden hosts some of the biggest names in music, while smaller venues like Brooklyn Steel or the Bowery Ballroom are great venues for more intimate performances. Wondering who’s coming to town? Check out sites like DONYC to find out who’s playing The Big Apple.

Watch Sports

Sports are a big deal in a major metropolis like New York City. Depending on the time of year, you can catch the Knicks at their home court in Madison Square Garden, or head to Yankee Stadium to watch the dynasty play ball. As Canadians, we’re inclined to want to catch a hockey game with the Rangers—but that’s just us!

New York is such a large city with so many passionate sports fans. If soccer is your speed, the NYCFC matches at Yankee Stadium are an exciting experience, surrounded by a crowd of like-minded sports fans.

Be Part of Live TV Show Tapings

The entertainment industry is a big deal in New York. So many shows filmed in front of live studio audiences take place here, from late-night talk shows to daytime TV.

If you’ve ever wanted to be a part of a live studio audience and get a glimpse at how the sausage is made, you’re in the right place. NYC is home to some of the most-watched TV daytime and late-night talk shows. Many offer free tickets for tapings.

NBC Studios at Rockefeller Center is a good bet—it’s where they film popular shows like The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Kelly Clarkson Show, The View, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, or Saturday Night Live. Tapings normally last about 75 minutes or longer.

Most tickets are released online weeks in advance, but some standby options are available on the day of the taping. To secure tickets, however, you may have to wait in a long line or enter a lottery beforehand. Still, these are the kind of experiences well worth seeing live—at least once in your life.

Listen to Candlelight Concerts

Candlelight Concerts asks: imagine hearing the songs of modern-day hitmakers, like Taylor Swift or Queen, performed by classical musicians. Well, it’s a thing.

These concerts are a popular activity in over 100+ cities across the world—but there’s something especially magical about attending a performance in New York City.

Here in New York, these concerts tend to take place at different venues across the city. Sometimes held in churches, other times in concert halls. Consult Candlelight Concerts’ official website the next time you’re in town.

Embrace the Seasons

Every season in New York City offers something new, from magical winter experiences to vibrant summer events. No matter when you visit, there's always a special way to soak in the seasonal charm of the city. Plan your trip around these iconic events and make the most of NYC’s ever-changing landscape.

Ice Skate at Rockefeller Center

Few winter traditions are as memorable and iconic as ice skating at the ice rink at Rockefeller Plaza. The rink at Rockefeller Center first opened in 1936 and has welcomed skaters during the winter months ever since. Here, you’ll glide across the famous rink beneath the sparkling Christmas tree. Don’t have room in your luggage for a pair of skates? Not to worry, you can rent them on-site.

💡 Did You Know? The Rockefeller Christmas tree is typically the Norway Spruce variety. This is because it has a straight, sturdy trunk, so it’s able to stand up against chilly winds.

Watch Movies at Rooftop Cinema Club

With the Rooftop Cinema Club, you have the chance to catch classic films under the stars. In Midtown, the cinema is located on the third floor ‘Skylawn’ rooftop of the Embassy Suites Hotel.

Once you’re up there, you’ll be treated to a lovely outdoor cinema surrounded by the skyline, beneath the city stars.

These outdoor screenings provide cozy seating, wireless headphones, and a unique atmosphere perfect for a romantic or fun night out.

Attend Shakespeare in the Park

We love a good story, and no one does it better than Shakespeare. Shakespeare in the park turns Central Park’s Delacorte Theater into an open-air stage. It’s an event hosted by The Public Theater, and a fun way to see the Bard’s work in action. Arrive early for the best seats in the house!

Explore Christmas Lights Tours

If you’re here during the holiday season, why not book a Holiday Tour? Everywhere you look, you’ll see dazzling lights and charming window displays. Want to see the city in full Christmas regalia?

Book a Christmas lights tour to see the most spectacular decorations—you’ll get to see the over-the-top holiday décor in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn to all the festive storefronts along Fifth Avenue.

Some tours even include hot cocoa stops to keep you warm while you explore. There’s no place like New York City during the holidays—just ask Kevin McCallister from “Home Alone 2: Lost In New York.”

Hidden Gems at Night

These best-kept secrets and lesser-known haunts are some of New York City’s finest.

Walk The High Line

The High Line is beautiful by day, and utterly magical by night. This elevated park was built on a former runway. Alongside the pathway, you’ll see tons of art installations and benches. During the summer, there are even telescopes set up so you can see celestial events on clear nights.

Visit SUMMIT One Vanderbilt

SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, located in the One Vanderbilt tower, is its own kind of observation deck. By that we mean that this multi-floor attraction isn’t just an observation deck. It’s also mirrored walls, floating glass ledges, and impressive views. Book tickets during sunset or later in the evening to watch the city transform and take on a more sensual vibe.

Experience The Edge Observation Deck

Feeling daring? Head to The Edge, a.k.a, the highest outdoor sky deck in the Western Hemisphere. Are your palms sweaty yet? Good.

The Edge is suspended 100 floors above the city with a glass-floor view and angled glass walls, so you’ll feel like you’re floating mid-air. Though it’s safe as can be, your tummy might turn a little. Just ask our acrobats about heights.

Visit Top of the Rock

The Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center provides some of the best views in all of New York City, hands down. From way up, you get to see 360-degree views of Manhattan, including the Empire State Building, which towers off in the distance.

At night, the experience is even more magical as the twinkling city buzzes all the way down below. It’s well worth the hike up the 70+ floors—don’t worry, you have to take an elevator to get there.

End Your NYC Night Adventures on a High Note
