From the Podium to the Stage

Over the years, Cirque du Soleil has been home for over 75 world-class athletes and champions.

Cirque du Soleil stands at the fascinating intersection of artistry and athleticism, just like many world-class sporting events. This dynamic combination has given rise to an unprecedented outcome; one where past champions and medalists from around the globe bring their extraordinary talent to the world-renowned stages of Cirque du Soleil. The blend of elite sporting abilities and imaginative circus arts creates a captivating and impressive showcase of skills for audiences worldwide.

The first occurrence of this can be traced back to the 1990’s, when Cirque du Soleil began recruiting professional athletes to infuse their expertise into the shows in multiple ways. First with unparalleled physical prowess, then with their ability to train and teach others how to push their limits to the fullest, learn new disciplines, and in some cases, even take on supporting roles off the stage.

Athletes On and Off the Stage

These athletes, accustomed to pushing the boundaries of human performance, found a new canvas for their talents within Cirque's imaginative narratives, visually stunning productions and meticulous operations.

Athletes from all over the world have dared to run away with the circus, following their sports career. The current tally is 77, an impressive number that includes many different disciplines. From figure skating to diving by way of gymnastics and synchronized swimming, these champions have won countless titles over the course of their journey. Some even won world-class medals, serving as testimonies of their superhuman skillsets. Fun fact, over the years, "O" has seen the greatest number of world-level athletes join its cast: 27!

Not all of them went on to take a role on stage at Cirque du Soleil, some joined us as experts working behind the scenes too. A stellar example is Fabrice Becker, a French gold medalist of the 1992 Albertville games, who took first place in ski ballet, a demonstration sport. He then moved on to Cirque du Soleil, first as a member of the casting team, and is now Vice President of Creation!
